Lynda Barr

What’s your background?

I studied law at Edinburgh University then moved to Glasgow for my traineeship. I qualified as a solicitor in 2010 but decided that I was looking for a change in career, which led me to working for the British Red Cross.

So what does your job entail?

I work the British Red Cross as the Programme Manager for the Argyll & Bute Short Break Bureau. The bureau is a Public Social Partnership between the British Red Cross and Argyll & Bute Council.

I was appointed in 2010 to establish and launch the bureau throughout Argyll & Bute. The partnership has proved successful and the bureau has been running for over a year extending beyond the original pilot year.

The Bureau arranges respite care for those who are cared for and their carers, either within Argyll & Bute or out with the local area. The purpose is to introduce more flexibility and choice for short respite breaks.

The variety and diversity of my work is the best thing about my job. I was also enjoy the challenge of developing a new service and the opportunities that come along with this. Being part of the British Red Cross is also very rewarding. The charity has many services within Scotland that I was previously unaware of, such as loan of medical equipment, therapeutic care, humanitarian education and transport and escort services.

When you’re not working what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy body attack, skiing and snow boarding and walking as I am tackling the West Highland Way this summer. I have taken up curling this year and realised its not only for those over the age of 70!

I also attempt to play golf, but definitely still learning.

Why did you join GYP?

I joined GYP when it started in 2010 as I knew others who went to Edinburgh Young Professionals and recommended it.

What has been your favourite GYP event & why?

First GYP Thursday drinks back in March 2010 where I was the winner of a meal for two at Grill on the Corner!

Which upcoming GYP event are you most looking forward to & why?

Summer BBQ as I didn’t manage to make it last year and heard it was a great success.
