Member of the Month: September 2013
Proudly carrying on his father’s legacy, Stephen is a director of Cole Advertising & Design, a creative design and media agency based in Glasgow. In amongst a fair amount of jet-setting, Stephen is a regular attendee at GYP events. Find out more about September’s member of the month and his family’s firm below.
What’s your background?
Born in Glasgow attending school and university studying business, however I was always keen to follow in my Dad’s footsteps in the advertising & design world.
Tell us about your business.
It was my Dad who started the business in 1986 after working in ad agencies across the UK. As a kid visiting him at work, it was always an exciting place with lots of excitement – I was hooked and wanted to be a part of it which was handy as he said to me that joining him was always part of his plan!
Sadly he passed away a few years ago, which meant losing my boss, mentor and hero – a very hard time for my family, but we rallied together.
The agency is headed up by Creative Director, Garry McCann, my brother Michael, and myself. Best thing about my job is I get to work in a challenging, but fun environment with a great team.
If money and time were no object, what would you do?
Recently helped out at my nephew’s 7th birthday party with football coaching and really enjoyed it. With Andy Murray winning Wimbledon, it would be great to invest in centres across Scotland to help kids get exercise, learn a few sports and maybe we could qualify for a World Cup again.
When you’re not working what do you enjoy doing?
During the week, I keep a low profile so Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones box sets are a great way to unwind. Also keen on gym, jogging and hot yoga to help switch off.
I love to travel and am fortunate that I have family in some exciting locations such as Boston, London and LA. My good friends just had their wedding in Ibiza which involved 7 days of great laughs and sun.
Coffee: Vanilla Black on Sauchiehall Street is a great coffee shop.
Drinks: Numerous bars in Finnieston area are worth checking out.
Cinema: IMAX at Braehead is a brilliant cinema and have Thor 2 with my niece and nephew coming up.
Books: True North by Bill George is an excellent business read.
Music: I have an eclectic taste when it comes to music and always keen to hear new stuff which was perfect in Ibiza. Gig wise, Arctic Monkeys and Queens of the Stone Age are playing in November which I’m looking forward to.
Why did you join GYP? Any advice for new members or those thinking about coming to their first event?
Initially I was hesitant, but heard from numerous sources that it was informal and fun. When it comes it networking, we are all in the same boat and won’t know many of the attendees. The GYP team make you feel very welcome immediately and introduce you around.
What has been your favourite GYP event and why?
The Summer Party at the Botanic Gardens was just an excellent night out from start to finish. I had brought one of my best mates along – he had never been to a GYP event and had a blast. Full credit to the team for organising it!
Are there any events you would like to see us run?
Anything involving booze/food/tunes would be a good start – the GYP team throw a most excellent party!
