Member of the Month: June 2015, and exclusive member offer!
It’s the return of our popular Member of the Month feature, and to celebrate we’ve teamed up with June’s Member of the Month to bring you an exclusive offer on a cool new product called LUPO that will make finding those lost keys – and taking great selfies – a breeze! Read on to find out more about the offer and, of course, our featured member, Raj Sark, CEO of Connect-In.
I hail from India and have lived in a number of different countries (Denmark, Germany, England and of course Scotland). As a kid I loved travelling and that continues into my adult life. I came to Scotland in 2008 and got a Masters degree in Engineering Management, and had been working with a wireless firm in Denmark for over 3 years before having the chance to do my own startup. I have an engineering degree from MIT Manipal, India – an institute known for producing many tech leaders including global CEOs of Microsoft and Nokia, to name a few.
My own aspirations, however, have always been to be a ‘startup guy’.
Tell us about your company.
In January 2013 I came back to Glasgow and have been working with our startup, Connect-In Ltd, ever since. We are now venture funded. Before that I was within Nokia’s incubator in Copenhagen for 6 months building a proof of concept for a smart tag that has now become LUPO – and what a ride it has been!
Doing a startup is always full of challenges and, equally so, there are opportunities.
If money and time were no object, what would you do?
It would surely involve a lot of travelling, volunteering projects and a fair bit of adventure stuff – hiking, canoeing and skydiving. I have ideas for a number of volunteer projects including teaching entrepreneurship to kids in Asia, Africa, etc.
Finally, I like to do standup comedy when I get some free time!
When you’re not working what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy playing squash and also cooking or having a glass of wine to unwind. These days I’m quite into audio books as they are faster to digest.
Why did you join GYP? Any advice for new members or those thinking about coming to their first event?
I find it a great way of meeting other professionals in Glasgow and I like the aspect of it being focused on the young professionals in the city. I just came to one event, and enjoyed it much that I had to come back again and again.
What has been your favourite GYP event and why?
The ‘Beers of the Commonwealth’ event at Brewdog last year as it was a joint event with LES and expanded the network. Also it involved tasting some excellent craft beer! Meeting the GYP founders and organisers has been great too.
Which upcoming GYP event are you most looking forward to and why? Are there any events you would like to see us run?
The GYP Summer Party on 10th July. Possibly some trips around Glasgow in the future could be interesting.
