Member of the Month: October 2012
A long-serving GYP member who has lived on three continents (just ask him!), Sam loves reading and the great outdoors.
What’s your background?
Well, if I tell you where I’m from then I can’t ask people to guess! It’s a bit complicated…let me start from 18. After taking degrees at UCL and Oxford in Classics, I spent three years teaching English in China (yes, I can now speak some Mandarin) before moving to Glasgow.
Tell us about your job.
I’m on the Graduate Programme at SPX ClydeUnion Pumps, which gave me a job when I was looking, so I took it. Good enough reason to move here, in my books! I’ve spent most of my time working on market research or entry and process improvements. I’m hoping to move onto an different role in a team that doesn’t exist yet, so you’ll have to ask me again in a few weeks.
If money & time were no object, what would you do?
When you’re not working what do you enjoy doing?
Walking, hiking, reading, travelling, badminton, Scrabble.
Cinema: Filmhouse Theatre in Edinburgh (Family plug! My brother works there.)
Night out: Malone’s Bar in Zhangjiagang
Why did you join GYP? Any advice for new members or those thinking about coming to their first event?
When I moved to Glasgow, I knew one person. He moved away a month later. I had to meet people somehow and GYP seemed to have the sort of people I might get on with. Just go say hello to lots of people. No one bites (except Sara, but you really have to annoy her).
What has been your favourite GYP event?
Rubik’s Cube networking – it was my first GYP event. I think I managed to insult someone by refusing to give away a sticker because I wanted one of a specific colour in return. Sorry!
Which upcoming GYP event are you most looking forward to?
The James Bond Charity Pub Quiz; except I’m going to be away on holiday, which is really annoying because I’ve almost finished reading the books.
