“I am now leading the UK’s fastest growing gourmet food, snack and craft beer discovery service. We are on track to reach £1M in sales and are in the process of closing substantial seed investment.

Certainly before the Fellowship I would not have thought this was possible. Prior to Saltire, I had been running my own venture, Direct Mechanics and experienced burn out from over 18 months working in and on the business. It was this experience that made me seriously consider the Fellowship. I had always known that I wanted to build a successful business, leaving my secure graduate banking job to create Direct Mechanics. After Direct Mechanics, it therefore made sense, to give myself the best possible chance of success in the long term, in terms of skills, network, mind-set and experience. The Saltire Fellowship seemed the perfect fit.

The Fellowship has really changed the way I approach business. The learnings are vast and very practical, but specifically in three main areas:
·       Getting the right team & culture is the most important aspect of a successful venture.
·       Focus on the key metrics that drive results.
·       Form partnerships, not transactional vendor relationships.”

“Being an Australian-born American who had only lived in Scotland for a few years, I wasn’t sure the Saltire Foundation would welcome me, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The programme was just what I was looking for – an immersive business-growth focused curriculum that was more practical than an MBA and would help me create a tight-knit network of like-minded ambitious people in Scotland.

As a small business owner, it was a risk to take a ‘leave of absence’ for 3 months and invest in the Fellowship. It wasn’t easy, but being a business owner never is – and in the end, I even remotely won the largest piece of consultancy work I’d had to-date using some of the sales techniques I was learning at Babson.

In the first year after my return, I went from being a virtual sole trader to a team of 7, including another Saltire Fellow, David Toy, and a Saltire Scholar. It certainly hasn’t been easy – but I believe the only way to stay on top of your game is to constantly reinvent and the Saltire Fellowship gave me an even larger platform for reinvention than I could have anticipated.”
